Where to buy Pokémon cards in Birmingham

Birmingham is the second-largest city in the UK and has fewer relevant shops in our data than Bristol, Leeds or Sheffield. Part of that is how the data is labelled. Part of it is real, and it shapes where you should look.

Our store dataset records 149 retail locations in Birmingham that could carry Pokémon. Here is how they split, and what to do with them.

What Birmingham has

Six toy and game shops and two independents, for a city of over a million people. Nottingham, an hour away by train, has 8 independents from a fraction of the population. Birmingham sits close to the national shape: supermarkets at 79.9% against 77.3% nationally, independents at 1.3% against 1.7%.

The total is also low. Bristol has 244 locations in our data, Leeds 217, Birmingham 149. The Birmingham count covers the city itself, not the wider West Midlands. Solihull, Wolverhampton, Walsall and the rest are a short drive from the centre and are not in the 149. Treat the figure as a floor.

The chains

The toy and game shops first, because these are the ones people plan around.

Two Smyths, neither of them central. The B31 Smyths and the GAME share a postcode district, so one trip covers both.

WHSmith and TG Jones both appear. TG Jones is the former WHSmith high street estate, renamed after the sale in 2025. The WHSmith name stayed with the travel shops. The B2 TG Jones is the central one. Range decisions there are still settling, so check it when you pass rather than planning a trip around it.

General retail, 22 locations:

Poundland at 8 is the largest estate here. It carries the cheap end, blisters and small tins, and almost nobody checks it.

Argos at 5 is the one to work through in order. Per-store availability is on every product page, and you can reserve before you travel.

Supermarkets are four in every five locations:

Co-op and Tesco Express are convenience formats with narrow ranges. The seven Asda and six Morrisons are the larger stores, where a pallet is more likely to arrive and more likely to go unnoticed.

The independents

Two in our data.

Element Games is central. Battleground Gaming UK is out in B27. Two shops is few enough to be a regular at both. Independent shops receive allocation directly, take preorders, and have no stock feed for anyone to watch. In a city with only two, being known at one counts for more than it does in Nottingham, where regulars are spread across eight.

Two is also almost certainly an undercount. Our source is OpenStreetMap, and small shops are mapped less reliably than chains.

What to actually do in Birmingham

Work Argos first. Five branches, all checkable online, all reservable.

Pair the two B31 stops. Smyths and GAME in the same postcode district. One trip, two toy-and-game checks.

Get known at Element Games or Battleground. Buy at RRP a few times and ask to be told when things land.

Use the larger supermarkets, not the Expresses. 119 supermarket locations sounds like a lot until you take out 37 Co-op and Tesco Express sites. The Asda and Morrisons stores carry a range wide enough to matter.

Look past the city label. If you are driving, the boundary between Birmingham and the Black Country is meaningless.

Do not expect Birmingham to help online. Website restocks are national and unannounced. For those, restock alerts matter and your postcode does not.

Our data records shop locations, not verified stock. A branch appearing here means it belongs to a chain that generally carries the relevant ranges, or is a named independent. It does not mean Pokémon is on the shelf there today.
