Where to buy Pokémon cards in Newcastle
Newcastle upon Tyne has the highest toy and game share of any city in our data, and almost all of it is inside one postcode district. It also has, for cards, no independent at all.
Our store dataset records 116 retail locations in Newcastle that could carry Pokémon. Here is how they split and what that means on the ground.
What Newcastle has
| Type | Locations | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Supermarkets | 87 | 75.0% |
| General retail | 16 | 13.8% |
| Toy and game shops | 12 | 10.3% |
| Independent game shops | 1 | 0.9% |
Twelve toy and game shops from 116 locations is 10.3%, against 6.0% nationally and 3.9% in London. No other city on our list comes close. Four of the twelve are one travel site counted four times, explained below.
The one independent is a Warhammer store, which sells Warhammer and not Pokémon. For cards, the independent count in our data is zero.
The chains
Toy and game shops:
| Shop | Postcode |
|---|---|
| WHSmith | NE13 8BZ |
| WHSmith | NE13 8BZ |
| WHSmith | NE13 8BZ |
| WHSmith | NE13 8BZ |
| WHSmith | NE3 1JZ |
| WHSmith | NE1 5DL |
| GAME | NE1 7DF |
| GAME | NE1 7XQ |
| Forbidden Planet | NE1 5JE |
| Menkind | NE1 7XS |
| TG Jones | NE1 7DE |
| Travelling Man | NE1 5JE |
Four WHSmith records at NE13 8BZ. That is one travel site with several units, not four shops. Take those out and the count is eight.
Seven of the remaining eight are in NE1. WHSmith, two GAME, Forbidden Planet, Menkind, TG Jones and Travelling Man, all in the city centre. Forbidden Planet and Travelling Man share a postcode.
Travelling Man behaves like an independent. It is a small northern chain of comic and game shops, classed as toy and game because it is a chain, but it buys and knows its regulars the way an independent does.
No Smyths appears in our Newcastle data. As with Edinburgh, that may be a gap in the source or an effect of the city label. The table has none.
General retail, 16 locations:
| Brand | Locations |
|---|---|
| Poundland | 4 |
| Home Bargains | 3 |
| B&M | 2 |
| Argos | 2 |
Argos at 2 is the checkable estate. Per-store availability on every product page, reservable. Poundland, Home Bargains and B&M are nine locations between them, carrying the cheaper ranges and the pallets that never reach a website.
Supermarkets, 87 locations:
| Brand | Locations |
|---|---|
| Tesco Express | 14 |
| Sainsbury's Local | 11 |
| Aldi | 8 |
| Asda | 8 |
| Co-op | 7 |
| Lidl | 6 |
Newcastle's supermarket share of 75.0% is the lowest on our list, below the national 77.3%. Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local and Co-op are 32 of the 87. Asda at 8, Aldi at 8 and Lidl at 6 are the stores with a range wide enough to matter.
The independents
| Shop | Postcode |
|---|---|
| Warhammer | NE1 6JQ |
Warhammer sells Warhammer. It does not carry Pokémon. So for cards, our Newcastle data has no independent shop.
That is a statement about the data, not the city. Our source undercounts small shops everywhere, and a city of Newcastle's size will have card shops that no OpenStreetMap volunteer has added yet.
What to actually do in Newcastle
Walk NE1. WHSmith, two GAME, Forbidden Planet, Menkind, TG Jones and Travelling Man in one loop. Seven chain shops on foot is the best single route of any city on our list.
Treat Travelling Man as your independent. Buy at RRP a few times, ask to be told when things land. It is the closest thing in the data to a shop that receives its own allocation.
Use Argos for the sweep. Two branches, both checkable online, both reservable.
Use Asda, Aldi and Lidl over the convenience stores. 32 of the 87 supermarkets are Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local or Co-op. The 22 larger stores are the better use of a journey.
Leave online drops to alerts. Website restocks are national and unannounced. Restock alerts cover those and a Newcastle postcode gives no edge.
The honest caveat
Our data records shop locations, not verified stock. A branch appearing here means it belongs to a chain that generally carries the relevant ranges, or is a named independent. It does not mean Pokémon is on the shelf there today. For Newcastle in particular, absence from the independent table is not absence from the city.

Common questions
Where can I buy Pokémon cards in Newcastle?
NE1 does almost all of the work: WHSmith, two GAME stores, Forbidden Planet, Menkind, TG Jones and Travelling Man are all in the city centre. Argos has 2 checkable branches, and Poundland, Home Bargains and B&M have nine locations between them.
How many card shops are there in Newcastle?
Our store data records 12 toy and game shop locations and 1 independent game shop in Newcastle, out of 116 relevant retail locations. Four of the twelve are one travel site counted four times, and the one independent is a Warhammer store, which does not sell Pokémon.
Are there any independent card shops in Newcastle?
Not in our store data, once the Warhammer store is set aside. That reflects the source, which maps chains well and small shops poorly, rather than the city. Travelling Man in NE1 is the nearest thing in the table to an independent.
Is there a Smyths in Newcastle?
Our store data records no Smyths under the Newcastle upon Tyne label. That may be a gap in the source or a result of how the wider area is labelled, so check the Smyths website directly for the nearest branch.
Is Newcastle good for buying Pokémon at retail?
For chain toy shops, yes. Seven relevant shops in NE1 is the densest centre outside London, and the toy and game share of 10.3% is the highest we have mapped. For independents it is weak, with none in the data that sell cards.
Where this fits
Newcastle is the chain-dense, independent-poor end of the spectrum, the reverse of Edinburgh up the line, which has five card-relevant independents and one Argos. Leeds is the nearest English city with a similar centre. The national retailer-by-retailer picture is in where to buy Pokémon cards in the UK.
Paragn Network has run since 2012. Our in-store alerts are filtered against this store dataset, so a member in Newcastle is not told about stock in Truro, alongside monitors on more than 1,000 UK retailer websites. The free channel is open if you want to see them before paying for anything.
