Where to buy Pokémon cards in Edinburgh

· 6 min read

Edinburgh has as many independent game shops as it has toy and game chains, and that has not happened in any other city we have mapped. Nottingham comes closest, and Edinburgh's ratio is better.

Our store dataset records 158 retail locations in Edinburgh that could carry Pokémon. Here is why the independent figure matters more than the total.

What Edinburgh has

TypeLocationsShare
Supermarkets13384.2%
General retail138.2%
Toy and game shops63.8%
Independent game shops63.8%

Six independents from 158 locations is 3.8%, against 3.2% in Nottingham and 1.7% nationally. The best ratio of any city on our list. One of the six is a Warhammer store, which does not sell Pokémon, so five are relevant for cards.

General retail at 8.2% is the lowest share on our list. Thirteen locations, and the largest brand among them is Waterstones. There is one Argos and one Poundland. That changes the strategy: the discounter route that works in Leeds or Sheffield barely exists here.

The chains

Toy and game shops:

ShopPostcode
WHSmithEH12 9DN
WHSmithEH12 9DN
WHSmithEH16 4SA
Forbidden PlanetEH1 1LL
TG JonesEH15 3RH
The EntertainerEH12 9JU

No Smyths appears in our Edinburgh data. Every English city on our list has at least one.

Two WHSmith records share EH12 9DN. That is one travel site counted twice, not two shops. The Entertainer in EH12 9JU is in the same postcode area, out west.

General retail, 13 locations:

BrandLocations
Waterstones3
Home Bargains2
Ryman2
The Works2
Poundland1
Argos1

One Argos. Everywhere else on our list Argos is the retailer you can check from home. In Edinburgh that is a single branch, so the sweep-from-a-sofa method covers very little of the city.

No B&M recorded. With Home Bargains at 2 and Poundland at 1, the cheap-range discounter estate is three shops.

Supermarkets, 133 locations:

BrandLocations
Co-op39
Tesco Express22
Sainsbury's Local22
Lidl10
Aldi7

83 of the 133 are Co-op, Tesco Express or Sainsbury's Local. Convenience formats with a handful of lines. Lidl at 10 and Aldi at 7 are the mid-size stores.

The independents

This is the reason to buy in Edinburgh.

ShopPostcode
Ancient Robot GamesEH6 8LN
Black Lion GamesEH8 9NH
Games HubEH3 9JB
Mox in the HoleEH3 9NB
pokécardsEH4 1HU
WarhammerEH2 3AT

Warhammer sells Warhammer, so set that one aside. That leaves five.

Games Hub and Mox in the Hole are both in EH3 9, a short walk apart. Black Lion Games is in EH8, near the university. Ancient Robot Games is out in EH6, Leith. pokécards, in EH4, is the only shop in any of our city posts with the product in its name.

Five independents in five parts of the city, most of them within a bus ride of the centre. Each receives allocation directly, takes preorders, and has no stock feed for anyone to monitor. In Edinburgh, more than anywhere except Nottingham, being a regular somewhere is the strongest thing you can do.

What to actually do in Edinburgh

Lead with the independents. Five shops that could carry cards. Pick the one or two nearest you, buy at RRP a few times, and ask to be told when things land.

Walk EH3 and EH1. Games Hub, Mox in the Hole and Forbidden Planet are close together. One loop covers a chain specialist and two independents.

Do not plan around the discounters. Three shops. The B&M and Home Bargains route that works in northern England is not available here.

Use Lidl and Aldi rather than the Co-ops. 83 of the 133 supermarkets are convenience formats. The 17 Lidl and Aldi stores give better odds per visit.

Leave online drops to alerts. Website restocks are national and unannounced. Restock alerts cover those and an Edinburgh postcode gives no edge.

The honest caveat

Our data records shop locations, not verified stock. A branch appearing here means it belongs to a chain that generally carries the relevant ranges, or is a named independent. It does not mean Pokémon is on the shelf there today. Independent shops open and close more often than chains, so check before travelling.

Common questions

Where can I buy Pokémon cards in Edinburgh?

The independents are the strongest route: Games Hub and Mox in the Hole in EH3, Black Lion Games in EH8, Ancient Robot Games in EH6 and pokécards in EH4. Forbidden Planet in EH1 is the central chain specialist. Argos has one branch.

How many card shops are there in Edinburgh?

Our store data records 6 toy and game shop locations and 6 independent game shops in Edinburgh, out of 158 relevant retail locations. One independent is a Warhammer store, which does not sell Pokémon, so five are relevant for cards.

Is Edinburgh good for buying Pokémon at retail?

For independents, it is the best city we have mapped relative to size, with a 3.8% independent share against 1.7% nationally. For chains it is weak: one Argos, no Smyths in our data, and only 13 general retail locations.

Is there a Smyths in Edinburgh?

Our store data records no Smyths under the Edinburgh label. That may be a gap in the source, so check the Smyths website directly. The chain toy shops that do appear are The Entertainer, Forbidden Planet, TG Jones and WHSmith.

Do Edinburgh supermarkets sell Pokémon cards?

Many do, and they are 84% of the city's relevant locations, the same share as London. The catch is that 83 of the 133 are Co-op, Tesco Express or Sainsbury's Local, which carry narrow ranges. Lidl and Aldi give better odds.

Where this fits

Edinburgh and Nottingham are the two cities where independents, not chains, should lead the plan. Glasgow has more locations at 189 and a different shape. South of the border, Newcastle is the nearest English comparison. The national retailer-by-retailer picture is in where to buy Pokémon cards in the UK.

Paragn Network has run since 2012. Our in-store alerts are filtered against this store dataset, so a member in Edinburgh is not told about stock in Truro, alongside monitors on more than 1,000 UK retailer websites. The free channel is open if you want to see them before paying for anything.
