Where to buy Pokémon cards in Liverpool

Liverpool is the thinnest major city in our store data. Fewer locations than Cardiff, fewer toy and game shops than anywhere else on our list, and not one independent game shop recorded. That last figure needs explaining before anything else.

Our store dataset records 105 retail locations in Liverpool that could carry Pokémon. Here is what is in them, and what is missing.

What Liverpool has

Three toy and game shops and no independents, in a city region of a million and a half people. Manchester, which we described as thin, has 123 locations and one independent. Liverpool has fewer of both.

Zero does not mean Liverpool has no card shops. It means none is mapped in our source. OpenStreetMap is community-maintained, chains get mapped reliably, small shops do not. Liverpool is where that gap shows most. If you know a Liverpool card shop, it is missing from the map, not from the city.

The chains

Toy and game shops:

Two of the three are in L1, a few minutes apart on foot. Forbidden Planet is the closest thing to a specialist shop in the data. The Smyths is out in L11, a car journey rather than a walk.

No GAME, no WHSmith, no TG Jones recorded. Each of those appears in every other city in this series.

General retail, 16 locations:

Home Bargains at 11 is the whole story of Liverpool general retail. The chain started in the city and it shows: 11 of the 16 non-supermarket, non-toy locations are Home Bargains. It carries the cheaper ranges and takes pallets that never reach a website.

Argos at 1 is the lowest count of any city we have mapped. Everywhere else Argos is the retailer you can check systematically from home. In Liverpool that tool barely exists, so the in-store work has to be done in person.

Supermarkets, 86 locations:

Asda at 12 and full-size Tesco at 6 are the useful ones. Eighteen large-format stores is a real number for a city this size. Tesco Express at 17 is convenience, narrow ranges, low odds per visit. Iceland at 13 is a frozen-food estate that carries a small confectionery-aisle range at best.

The independents

None recorded. Our data has no independent game or card shop under the Liverpool label.

That is a statement about the data. Every other city on our list has at least one, and a city of Liverpool's size will have several. They do not appear because nobody has added them to OpenStreetMap yet.

The practical consequence is that the usual advice, find one independent and become a regular, has to be done by asking around rather than by reading a table. Forbidden Planet is the nearest thing in the data to a specialist shop and is a reasonable place to start asking.

What to actually do in Liverpool

Start in L1. Forbidden Planet and The Entertainer are a short walk apart. That is the whole toy-and-game centre in one stop.

Work Home Bargains. Eleven locations, more than in any other city we have mapped, and they receive the cheaper ranges in pallet quantities. Almost nobody monitors them.

Use the big supermarkets. Twelve Asda and six full-size Tesco. Those 18 stores are where a range wide enough to matter sits. Skip the Expresses.

Make the L11 Smyths a planned trip. One Smyths, not central.

Ask for the independents the map missed. Staff at Forbidden Planet, players at any card event, anyone who trades locally. The shops exist. Our data does not have them yet.

Lean on online alerts more than elsewhere. Liverpool has less in-store surface than any city on our list, so a larger share of your buying will be online. Website restocks are national and unannounced; restock alerts cover that and your postcode does not matter.

The honest caveat

Our data records shop locations, not verified stock. A branch appearing here means it belongs to a chain that generally carries the relevant ranges. It does not mean Pokémon is on the shelf there today. And for Liverpool in particular, absence from the data is not absence from the city.
