Where to buy Pokémon cards in Cardiff

· 6 min read

Cardiff is a small city with a large toy and game count. Nine chain toy shops from 120 locations is a higher share than London, Leeds or Bristol, and most of them sit in two postcode districts.

Our store dataset records 120 retail locations in Cardiff that could carry Pokémon. Here is how they split and where to go.

What Cardiff has

TypeLocationsShare
Supermarkets9377.5%
General retail1714.2%
Toy and game shops97.5%
Independent game shops10.8%

Toy and game at 7.5% is the second-highest share on our list, behind only Newcastle. Nationally the figure is 6.0%. One independent is thin, but it is a well-placed one. The supermarket share of 77.5% is almost exactly the national 77.3%.

The chains

Toys 'n' ThingsCF24 3NZ

CF10 has WHSmith, Forbidden Planet International and Menkind. The centre, on foot.

CF11 8EG has both a GAME and a Smyths. Same postcode, one retail site. The city's only independent is in CF11 8 as well, so that is the trip to make.

Toys 'n' Things is a Toymaster shop, which means an independently owned toy shop trading under a buying group. It sits under toy and game in our data because of the brand, but it buys more like an independent than a chain. CF24 also has a WHSmith.

TG Jones carries no postcode in our data. It is the former WHSmith high street estate, renamed after the 2025 sale, and it exists; the record just has coordinates and no postcode.

General retail, 17 locations:

BrandLocations
B&M7
Home Bargains4
Poundland3
Argos1
Hobbycraft1

B&M at 7 is the largest non-supermarket estate. With Home Bargains at 4 and Poundland at 3, the discounters are 14 of the 17. The cheaper ranges and the unannounced pallets live there.

Argos at 1. Per-store availability is published online and it is reservable, but one branch covers little of the city.

Supermarkets, 93 locations:

BrandLocations
Tesco Express18
Co-op18
Spar9
Lidl8
Aldi7

45 of the 93 are Tesco Express, Co-op or Spar. Convenience formats, narrow ranges. Lidl at 8 and Aldi at 7 are the mid-size stores where the odds per visit are better.

The independents

ShopPostcode
Firestorm GamesCF11 8AB

One independent in our data, and it is in the same postcode sector as the GAME and Smyths. That puts a specialist shop and two chain toy shops within one trip of each other.

Independent shops receive allocation directly, take preorders, and have no stock feed for anyone to watch. With one in the data, there is no choice to make about which to become a regular at.

One is also a floor. Our source undercounts small shops, and Cardiff will have card shops that OpenStreetMap volunteers have not added. If you know one, it is missing from the map, not the city.

What to actually do in Cardiff

Make CF11 8 the main trip. GAME, Smyths and Firestorm Games in one postcode sector. Two chain toy shops and the city's only mapped independent in a single stop.

Walk CF10. WHSmith, Forbidden Planet International and Menkind in the centre. Add Toys 'n' Things in CF24 if you are heading that way.

Get known at Firestorm Games. Buy at RRP a few times, ask to be told when things land. That is the one relationship available in the data, so build it.

Work B&M. Seven locations, the largest estate outside supermarkets, and nobody at a keyboard is watching them.

Use Lidl and Aldi over the Expresses. 45 of the 93 supermarkets are convenience formats. The 15 Lidl and Aldi stores are the better use of a journey.

Leave online drops to alerts. Website restocks are national and unannounced. Restock alerts cover those and a Cardiff postcode gives no edge.

The honest caveat

Our data records shop locations, not verified stock. A branch appearing here means it belongs to a chain that generally carries the relevant ranges, or is a named independent. It does not mean Pokémon is on the shelf there today. Independent shops open and close more often than chains, so check before travelling.
