Twelve toy and game shops is the joint highest on our list outside London, level with Newcastle and ahead of Leeds (11). Four independents is solid, though one of them sells Warhammer only. The supermarket share of 82.4% is above the national 77.3%, and most of that is convenience formats.

The chains

Three Smyths. More than Birmingham, Leeds or Sheffield, which have two each, and spread across three postcode districts: BS2, BS34 and BS30.

BS34 has a Smyths and a TG Jones in the same postcode district. One trip covers both. TG Jones is the former WHSmith high street estate, renamed after the 2025 sale, with range decisions still settling.

BS1 has WHSmith, Menkind and The Entertainer, plus one independent and the Warhammer store from the list below. Five relevant shops in one postcode district is a walking route.

General retail, 27 locations:

Argos at 3 is the checkable estate. Per-store availability on every product page, reservable before you travel.

Poundland, Home Bargains and B&M are 16 of the 27. The cheaper ranges and the unannounced pallets sit here.

Supermarkets, 201 locations:

109 of the 201 are Co-op, Tesco Express, Morrisons Daily or Spar. All four are convenience formats with a handful of lines each. That is why the supermarket share is so high. Lidl at 18 and Aldi at 12 are the mid-size stores worth the visit.

The independents

Warhammer sells Warhammer, not Pokémon. For cards that leaves three: Excelsior in the centre, Global Collectables in BS5, Cryptic Cabin out in BS15.

Three independents across three different parts of the city is a good spread. Each receives allocation directly, takes preorders, and has no stock feed for anyone to monitor. Become a regular at the one nearest you and you have a form of restock alerting that no software competes with.

What to actually do in Bristol

Walk BS1. WHSmith, Menkind, The Entertainer and Excelsior are all in the same postcode district. One loop, four checks, and Excelsior is the one to get known at.

Pair the BS34 stops. Smyths and TG Jones in the same district. Add the BS30 Smyths if you are heading east.

Use Argos for the sweep, but do not lean on it. Three branches is thin for 244 locations. Check them online, reserve, and treat the rest as legwork.
